On a day like today in 1805 Hans Christian Andersen was born in Odense, Denmark. Without a doubt the world’s best known Dane.
I’ve been fortunate enough to have traveled to Denmark twice, first in 2006 and that’s when I took this shot from the little mermaid sculpture, one of Copenhagen’s landmarks, and obviously the most famed character from Andersen’s stories. It’s so funny how a little statue can be world famous, but maybe it’s an analogy, little and beautiful, just like Copenhagen and Denmark.
Second time in Denmark was in 2007, and this time I went to Assistens Kirkegård, which is the cemetery where Andersen was buried, it’s a very peaceful place and doesn’t feel like a cemetery at all, on summer days you can actually see people having picnics and sunbathing.
This is not Andersen’s grave, but it’s at the same cemetery.
I really would love to go back to Denmark soon, friends and family in there whom I miss lots… damn, haven’t seen my cousin and nephews since 2007, that sucks! And it seems this year’s Roskilde Fest is gonna be amazing, just like every year!… but I’ll be there soon, I promise!!
